Gilbert, a golden retriever with a heart full of love, began his life with a special purpose. He was originally trained by Helping Paws in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, to become a service dog for veterans, first responders, and individuals with disabilities. However, his joyful and overly friendly personality led him down a different path. He was “fired” from service dog duties for loving everyone too much.
Instead, Gilbert found his forever home with Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their two adult children, Colin and Sophie. He quickly became a cherished member of the family, especially during challenging times like the pandemic and social unrest. His calming presence and cheerful demeanor brought warmth to those around him. He even made regular appearances in Zoom meetings, brightening everyone’s day.
On June 14, tragedy struck the Hortman family. During a violent incident at their home, Melissa and Mark tragically lost their lives. Gilbert was also seriously injured. Despite receiving emergency veterinary care, the extent of his injuries led the family to make the heartbreaking but humane decision to let him go peacefully.
To honor Gilbert’s life and legacy, Helping Paws, in collaboration with the Hortman family, established a memorial fund. “Gilbert’s Legacy: K9 Heroes Fund” aims to support the pairing of trained service dogs with veterans and first responders coping with PTSD. Additionally, a local veterinary clinic in Brooklyn Park raised over $5,600 to support emergency care for service dogs in Gilbert’s name.
Though he never officially served in the role he was trained for, Gilbert lived his life as a true companion, a gentle comfort, and a silent hero. His story reminds us that love, loyalty, and companionship are powerful forms of healing—and sometimes, the greatest acts of service come from simply being present.
